LA Style: Dorm Essentials

Dorm Essentials for Your LA Student Adventure

Congratulations on getting into a school in the City of Angels! Whether you're a local or coming from across the country, dorm life in LA comes with its own unique set of must-haves. CampusMOM is here to with our guide to the essentials that will make your transition smooth and your dorm room feel like home (away from home):

The Essentials:

Bedding: Remember, California sunshine doesn't mean you won't get chilly nights. Obviously a lightweight comforter and sheets are a must. Consider adding a throw blanket for extra coziness (especially in Malibu or Playa Del Rey where it can get colder at night.) CMC tip: Everyone in LA LOVES Barefoot Dreams blankets. Be sure to check your dorm bed size before you order. Most dorm beds are Twin XL. Also, consider a mattress pad. Don’t spend too much. It will be too bulky to take home at the end of the year and most students leave it behind.

Shower Caddy

This is key for keeping your shower essentials organized and within reach. CMC tip: Don’t buy an overly large caddy. Some dorm bathrooms have small lockers to keep your bathroom essentials.

CMC Recommends: MadeSmart Shower Tote

Towels: Pack enough bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths for the week. Quick-drying towels are ideal for the LA climate. CMC tip: Don’t buy skimpy towels. They will fall apart after a few washes or they will get fuzzies all over your clothes in the dryer.

Storage Solutions: Maximize your limited space with under-bed storage bins, organizers, and shelves. CMC tip: Closet hanging storage organizers are great. If you are sharing a room or have a triple, some times you can’t put things under your bed because your desk is there.

First-Aid Kit:

Be prepared for minor bumps and bruises with a basic first-aid kit. CMC tip: You will be a HERO on your dorm floor if you have Band-Aids!

CMC Recommends: First Aid Kit

Command Strips: Decorate your space without damaging the walls! Command strips are perfect for hanging pictures, tapestries, or fairy lights. CMC tip: Most dorms have concrete walls = no nails!

Plants: Liven up your room and purify the air with a few low-maintenance plants. Succulents and air plants do well in dorms. CMC tip: Run to Trader Joe’s for a cute potted plant to add some green to your room but not break the bank. We like to name our plant babies to motivate us to water them.

Reading Pillow:

Every student likes to read in their bed. Having a firm, reading pillow with arms is one of the best investment for their dorm room.

CMC Recommends: Nestl Reading Pillow

Bed Shelf:

If you’re on the top bunk, you NEED a shelf to store your phone, glasses and ear buds. CMC Tip: If you have enough room in front of your bed, attach there. It will be out of the way and usually closer to the outlet.

CMC Recommends: BedShelfie

Room Purifier:

Dorms are breeding grounds for germs. So many kids and so little clean air. Be sure to get this small but mighty air purifier.

CMC Recommends: Levoit Air Purifier

Extension Cord:

This is A MUST-HAVE power strip[ surge protector. This One Beat brand has 2 USB and 2 USC posts plus 6 outlets plus it’s 5ft long.

Mini Fridge: Store snacks, drinks, and leftovers in a mini fridge. CMC tip: Most universities will rent a fridge and microwave for the year. Be sure to check before you purchase.

Comfy Chair: If your dorm room is large enough, create a cozy reading nook with a beanbag chair or a small armchair. CMC Tip: This beanbag chair is great! It has a really strong canvas covering that is easily cleanable.

LA-Specific Items:

Sunscreen: This is non-negotiable, year-round in LA. Pack a high SPF facial sunscreen and reapply at least twice a day, especially during the long summer days.

Sunglasses and Hat: Protect your eyes and stay cool with a stylish pair of sunglasses and a hat. CMC tip: Have a bunch of sunglasses on hand to match your outfits. Try thrifting one of LA’s funky second hand stores to find unusual styles.

Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, and a reusable water bottle will save you money and reduce plastic waste. CMC tip: A MUST! The bigger the better.

Beach Gear: This is LA - Don’t forget your swimsuit! If you plan on hitting the iconic Venice boardwalk or Santa Monica beach, pack a beach towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothes.

Light Jacket or Sweater: Evenings in LA can get surprisingly cool, especially near the coast. Pack a light jacket or sweater for those times.

Bonus Tip: Pack light and remember that you can always buy additional items once you arrive in LA. Many dorms are close to stores and have laundry facilities, so you don't need to bring your entire wardrobe.
